Finding Our Course: A Lesson on Heart Calibration

Life is a journey, and as students, leaders, and pioneers for Christ, it's easy to get distracted by the demands of school, work, relationships, and personal goals. At chapel, Wehi Miles shared a timely message, “Course Correction: When God Recalibrates the Heart for the Kingdom,” reminding us that our lives must remain firmly grounded in Jesus Christ.

No matter where we are in our journey, God faithfully guides us back to Him. His correction is not rejection. Rather, it is an invitation to draw near, realign our hearts, and continue walking in His purpose.

The Gift of God’s Correction

A ship that is only slightly off course may eventually arrive far from its intended destination. In the same way, small areas of compromise, pride, fear, or distraction can gradually pull our hearts away from the path God has prepared for us.

God’s correction is an expression of His love. He does not correct us to shame us; He corrects us because He desires for us to grow, flourish, and live fully surrendered to His Kingdom purposes. When we welcome His guidance, we make room for Him to shape us into people who reflect Christ more clearly.

Three Practices for a Calibrated Heart

1. Examine

The first step is inviting the Holy Spirit to examine the condition of our hearts. Like a garden, our inner lives contain things that may not be immediately visible. God sees beneath the surface—our motives, fears, wounds, habits, and desires.

This requires humility. Before we focus on the faults or struggles we see in others, we are called to ask the Lord to reveal what needs His attention within us. A heart that is open to God’s searching is a heart prepared for transformation.

2. Uproot

Once God reveals what is growing in our hearts, we must allow Him to remove what does not belong. Pride, fear, bitterness, hidden compromise, and self-reliance can take root quietly if left unaddressed.

Uprooting is not always comfortable, but it is necessary for healthy growth. God is not interested in merely managing the symptoms in our lives—He desires to bring healing and freedom at the root. As we surrender these areas to Him, He makes space for new life to grow.

3. Cultivate

A healthy garden needs more than weeds removed; it needs consistent care. In the same way, a calibrated heart is cultivated through daily relationship with Jesus.

We are called to abide in Christ through prayer, Scripture, worship, fellowship, and obedience. As we remain connected to Him, the fruit of the Spirit begins to grow in us. God forms our character, strengthens our faith, and teaches us to love and serve others with Christ's heart.

Continuing the Journey

We are voyagers, but we are not the captain. God is the One who leads, directs, and sustains us through every season. Even when the storms are loud, the path feels uncertain, or the journey becomes difficult, we can trust the One who holds our lives in His hands.

As a Christ-centered community, may we welcome God’s loving correction. May we continually invite Him to examine our hearts, uproot what does not honor Him, and cultivate lives that bear fruit for His glory.

Our destination is not simply personal success or accomplishment. Our destination is a life that points to Jesus and advances His Kingdom. Worship and Word Together

One strength of this service was how worship and the Word worked together. The songs prepared our hearts to receive Scripture. The Scripture gave depth and direction to our worship. The exhortations helped us apply what we heard to our daily lives.

This pattern is deeply biblical. In the early church, believers gathered to break bread, pray, sing psalms and hymns, and teach one another from the apostles’ writings. Worship and Word were not separate tracks. They were woven together to form a complete picture of life with God.

A Prayer for Continued Worship and Encouragement

Lord, thank You for this time of worship, fellowship, and encouragement through Your Word. Thank You for the message You have placed on the hearts of those who faithfully share Your truth with our campus community.

As we continue our journey with You, teach us to welcome Your loving correction. Search our hearts and reveal the places where we have drifted from Your purpose. Give us the humility to surrender pride, fear, compromise, and anything else that keeps us from fully abiding in You.

Help us remain rooted in Your Word, steadfast in Your promises, and sensitive to the leading of Your Holy Spirit. Cultivate in us hearts that reflect Your love, grace, and truth. May we encourage one another, walk together in faith, and build a campus community that honors You in every area of life.

Let Pacific Rim Christian University be known as a place where worship is sincere, Scripture is honored, and Your people are strengthened to live for Your Kingdom. Guide us, Jesus, as we follow You—our faithful Captain and our sure destination.
