A Chapel of Worship and Exhortation: Hearing God’s Word Together
One of our undergraduate students sharing a Word and Exhortation
Our most recent chapel service at Pacific Rim Christian University felt different in the best possible way. The focus was simple and powerful: worship and exhortation. Instead of a single sermon from one speaker, students came up to read Scripture and share short words of encouragement. The rest of the service was filled with worship, as we lifted our voices and hearts to God together.
This kind of chapel reminds us that worship is not just about music. It is about the whole people of God responding to His presence with praise, Scripture, and encouragement. It is about letting the Word of Christ dwell richly among us, as we teach and admonish one another with all wisdom (Colossians 3:16).
Worship at the Center
From the first song to the last, worship was the heartbeat of the service. The room was not focused on performance or perfection. It was focused on Jesus. Students, staff, and faculty sang together, not as an audience watching a show, but as a family offering praise to God.
Worship in this setting became more than a prelude to a message. It became the message. Through lyrics and melodies, we declared who God is and what He has done. We remembered His faithfulness in the past, His presence in the present, and His promises for the future.
For many students, this reminded us that worship is a lifestyle, not just a weekly event. We carry it out of chapel and into our dorm rooms, classrooms, and workplaces. When worship shapes our hearts, it changes how we study, serve, and treat one another.
Students Sharing the Word
A unique and encouraging part of this chapel was the role students played in sharing Scripture and exhortation. Several students came forward to read God’s Word aloud and to offer brief words of encouragement based on what they had read.
This practice reflects the biblical picture of the body of Christ. In 1 Corinthians 14, Paul describes gatherings where believers speak words of strengthening, encouragement, and comfort so that the whole church may be built up. That is exactly what happened in this chapel.
When students share Scripture and exhortation:
The whole body is activated, not just a few leaders.
Younger believers grow in confidence to speak God’s truth.
The community hears from different voices and perspectives.
Everyone is reminded that God can use anyone who is willing to be faithful with His Word.
For the students who spoke, this was an opportunity to step out in faith. For the rest of us, it reminded us that God’s Spirit is at work across our entire campus, not just among staff or older leaders.
The Power of Exhortation
Exhortation is more than a quick pep talk. It is Spirit-filled encouragement rooted in Scripture. It calls us to remember who God is, to trust His promises, and to live in light of the gospel.
In this chapel, the exhortations were short but meaningful. They pointed us back to truths we sometimes forget in the rush of daily life:
God is near to the brokenhearted.
Christ’s grace is sufficient for our weaknesses.
We are not alone in our struggles.
God is faithful, even when our circumstances are not.
These words landed with weight because they came from peers who know the pressures of college life. They spoke into real needs: stress over exams, uncertainty about the future, loneliness, and the desire to grow closer to God.
Exhortation like this helps us carry Scripture's truth beyond the chapel walls. It gives us language to encourage one another during the week, not just on chapel day.
Worship and Word Together
One strength of this service was how worship and the Word worked together. The songs prepared our hearts to receive Scripture. The Scripture gave depth and direction to our worship. The exhortations helped us apply what we heard to our daily lives.
This pattern is deeply biblical. In the early church, believers gathered to break bread, pray, sing psalms and hymns, and teach one another from the apostles’ writings. Worship and Word were not separate tracks. They were woven together to form a complete picture of life with God.
When worship and exhortation are held together:
Our emotions are guided by truth, not just feelings.
Our minds are engaged, not just our hearts.
We leave chapel not only inspired, but also equipped to live for Christ.
This service modeled that balance in a simple and accessible way.
A Chapel That Builds Community
Services like this also strengthen community. When students share Scripture and encouragement, it creates a sense of ownership. Chapel is not something that happens to us. We do it together as the body of Christ.
This kind of participation helps students feel seen and valued. It reminds everyone that each person has something to contribute. It also builds trust, as we hear one another’s hearts and see how God is speaking to different people on campus.
Over time, this builds a culture where:
Students feel safe to step out and serve.
Encouragement becomes a normal part of campus life.
Worship and Scripture shape the identity of the university, not just its schedule.
That is the kind of community PRCU is called to be.
Taking Worship and Exhortation Beyond Chapel
The real test of any chapel service is what happens after we leave the room. Did this time with God change how we live on Monday, not just on chapel day?
This service invites us to carry several practices into the week:
Personal worship: Setting aside time to sing, pray, and meditate on Scripture alone with God.
Scripture memory: Holding on to verses we heard so we can recall them in moments of stress or temptation.
Encouraging others: Using the same spirit of exhortation to speak life into friends, roommates, and classmates.
Trusting God in worship: Choosing to worship even when we do not feel like it, trusting that God meets us as we draw near to Him.
When we live this way, chapel becomes more than an event. It becomes a rhythm that shapes our entire semester.
A Prayer for Continued Worship and Encouragement
Lord, thank You for this chapel of worship and exhortation. Thank You for the gift of Your Word and for the voices of students who shared it with courage and faith. Teach us to carry this spirit of worship into every part of our lives. Help us encourage one another with truth, stand firm on Your promises, and live as people shaped by Your presence. Let our campus be known as a place where worship is real, where Scripture is honored, and where Your people build one another up in love. In Jesus’ name, amen.
